Caroline Lucas is just not playing fair in Brighton Pavilion

I want to express support for Nancy Platts and Charlotte Vere.  Caroline Lucas is not playing fair in the election in Brighton Pavilion.

Watching Question Time tonight, Ms Lucas shamelessly displayed charm, personal authority, clarity of thought, poise, good humour and grace, not to mention a masterclass in articulating clear policies in a convincing and compelling way.

If Ms Lucas has any concern or compassion for her opponents in Brighton Pavilion, she would not have put on such a competent and effortless display.  Even Margaret Beckett and Charles Kennedy looked on with admiration.  Andrew Landsley looked amateurish.

It is not fair that Caroline Lucas is allowed to display her obvious and exceptional talent before a ntional audience.  Anyone in the Brighton Pavilion constituency who watched Question Time tonight will have been left in no doubt that is Lucas they have a candidate who, when elected, will take the House of Commons by storm.

Nancy Platts and Charlotte Vere, in their own right, are strong and impressive individuals, who would be dynamic candidates in any constituency.  Fate has dictated that they have the misfortune in coming up against the extraordinary Caroline Lucas.  It is just not fair.

  1. BPB: your post raises an obvious question. Is Brighton Pavilion enough for Caroline Lucas?

She is used to a certain cachet in Brussels as Green leader and talks a lot about the success she has had at a European level.

The Green Doctor enjoys the national limelight as we saw tonight. She likes the showbiz fundraisers and international acclaim: that’s why she takes flights to Palestine. She has crowed about making the top 100 woman list recently etc. She loves being a mover and shaker.

I fear being boring old Brighton’s mere MP is going to be a come down for the illustrious Caroline Lucas.

Would she want to lower herself to the drudgery of being a constituency MP and take on the mantle of our very own David lepper? Isn’t her time to valuable to worry about ordinary folk who need help with their council house or their tax credits or potholes. Why would a woman of such importance want to be troubled by the likes of us?

That’s why we shouldn’t vote for Dr Lucas. She’s making a big difference elsewhere. She’s got the better job in Brussels right now. That’s where she can remain in the style to which she’s accustomed. ;o)

    • OK Dan, we all know you would rather see Vere elected if Nancy fails. You and your new friend Charlotte do seem rather jealous of Caroline. You two remind me of two spiteful schoolkids ganging up on the most popular girl in class.

  2. I saw that uninspiring and charmless Caroline Lucas on Question time ,

I am still seething about what she said. The gist was becasue she was involved in porn Anna Spam (lib Dem) cannot be a feminist.

I sincerly hope Lucas does not get elected to parliament.

It certainly puts me off voting green. Do we really want another Anne Widdicome as an MP.

So far as I am concerned Lucas is a fake feminist. Feminism is about liberation not about pandering to stalinist bigots.

Every time I see Lucas she either too boring to remember what she whined on about or she makes me chew the carpet in liberal rage!!

  3. Yes, Keith, well done for not knowing the difference between a macho, masculine idea of “freedom of expression” and feminism.

Women can be sexists too. Don’t ever forget that. Women can equally perpetuate the notion of women being subordinate to mens cultural thirst for visual turn-ons.

Truth be told, women are more likely to be aroused by what they hear and not what they see. Pornography serves to the taste of more men than women.

Dan, the reason why voters should vote for Greens is because they want to. All polls from previous elections indicate that there is high, if not over-whelming, support for the Greens.

Caroline put in an impressive performance and was the only member of the panel to take pride in their convictions. Caroline was forward, straight and direct. The kind of politician Westminster needs.

    • It was Lucas who claims that Anna was not a feminist.

I don’t understand this business of impressive performance. She was boring., but then if you are a local green supporter I suppose you have to big her up.

A second rate MEP parachuted into a constituency, displacing the local candidate.

I normally vote Green, but I would not vote for her. It saddens me that this opportunity to get a good green local MP has ben wasted on this carreerist.

  4. Keith, you say, “A second rate MEP parachuted into a constituency, displacing the local candidate…”

    Caroline (Cazza ;-)) – a second rate MEP ?

Hmm… worry about your yardstick on talent, Keith.

People across the political spectrum accept Cazza’s one of the most brilliant MEPs in the UK contingent.

Obviously, I’m not sure what you do in the privacy of the polling booth, but you don’t sound in the faintest like a local Green supporter.

Cazza was elected in a democratic ballot of Brighton Green Party members.

She didn’t “displace the local candidate”.

There wasn’t a Green candidate for this election until the Greens selected via member ballot in 2007 and she won that ballot.

I assume you’re referring to Keith Taylor who preceded her in the 2005 gen election as Pavilion Green Parliamentary candidate?

Keith contested the 2007 selection, put up a good fight, but lost a democratic member vote.

More sense, not nonsense, would be good.

    • Well perhaps she is a first rate MEP rather than a second rate one. Perhaps there is not much difference.

It sounds like a good idea to keep her in the Euro Parliament then by making sure she doesn’t get to be an MP.

Judging by her lackluster performance on question time being “one of the most brilliant MEPs in the UK contingent” isn’t much of a complement. Even Charles Kennedy perfromed better (although I got thr impression he wasn’t really trying)

I still say it was a mistake to remove the local candidate in favour of a ‘national’ figure. The result will be that the greens could lose their only chance of getting an MP.

What really upset me however was her nasty comments about Anna Spam right at the end. If it had come from Anne Widicombe I would not have been so bothered. It was a transparent attempt to appeal to that small minded constituency, but for me it had the opposite effect. I suspect that many progressive and libertarian people in Brighton will feel the same.

      You failed to address that.

      • I suppose its a matter of taste, but I always find Charles Kennedy one of the most engaging and watchable contibutors in the QT arena.

Caroline Lucas ended her contribution with a viewpoint on pornography which some find contraversial, but the tory was suggesting prohibiting the right to strike at one point, which I find a lot more contraversial and upsetting!! (also he was boring and boorish – butting in constantly, along with the chap on the extreme right) Caroline did well.

  5. It was the bit at the end of Question Time about feminism that got me. Caroline Lucas went off on an amazing tirade against personal freedom.

    It made me shudder.

    Best wishes,

    Charlotte Vere

(My thoughts on the conflation of pornography with ‘personal freedom’)

  7. So, Charlotte, pornography is ‘personal freedom’? For whom, exactly?

Did Caroline’s view point interfere with your “personal freedom”, then?

Pornography does nothing to challenge gender inequality and misconceptions surrounding feminism and progress. Nothing.

“Tory candidate is porn fan” – seems like a fitting tabloid-esque headline to describe Vere’s take on “personal freedom.”

    • It rather depends on the pornography or erotica. It covers a multitude of sins.

It is clear that people like Lucas want to fill the prisons with people who have deviate from her idea about what we should be allowed to watch and do sexually.

It would seem that the tory candidate has taken a more grown up and tolerant attitude on this matter. In this at least she is a lot more progressive that Lucas.

The sex negative out of date stalinist ‘feminism’ portrayed by Lucas just confirms some people’s misconception about feminism
