Brown should stay

In just over an hour Gordon Brown will appear before the Parliamentary Labour Party. He will face calls to stand down. Yes Labour had its worst ever election result. But a change in leader will almost certainly result in the new leader facing calls for a general election.

And the danger of that would be the emergence of candidates, and possibly MP’s, from UKIP and the BNP. These are dangerous times. The conditions are favourable for the emergence of repressive, neo-fascist and fascist policies and forces.

Be angry with Brown. Demand explanations from your MP. But is Cameron better equipped to manage the recession? Absolutely not!

Brown should stay and we should debate issues – the economy, housing, anti-racism, public safety, personal rights – up until a general election next spring.

Let’s get away from this personality politics.
